As a small city in north New York, Syracuse is home to many hospitals and nursing homes making it a hot spot for aspiring CNAs. The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) is the governing body responsible for licensing nurse aides in New York. According to state and federal regulations, prospective nurse aides must complete a state-approved training program and obtain certification in order to work at licensed health care facilities. A small number of schools and nursing homes in the area prepare students for licensure to become Certified Nurse Aides (CNAs) within the state. Nursing homes, such as The Hearth and James Square Health and Rehabilitation may sponsor occasional training for prospective employees, so it’s worthwhile to check out similar places before enrolling in a paid program in and around Syracuse.

Syracuse Educational Opportunity Center

The Syracuse Educational Opportunity Center (SEOC) is a public school that collaborates with the State University of New York to provide higher educational and vocational training programs that lead to gainful employment. The institute’s nurse aide training program runs for 10 weeks and prepares students to take the state’s nurse competency evaluation to obtain licensure. Students spend the first eight weeks in the classroom and the final two weeks at a local health care facility for clinical training. Training is free for individuals who meet the program’s income guidelines. Applicants must provide ID with a New York address, income specifics, and a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible to take the state evaluation. The EOC also helps graduates with resume writing and job placement.
